Alexander Aboutaam’s mosaic, titled “Autumn,” brings together ochre, gold, and rust-red tones that suggest the colors of the season. The elongated face and broad shoulders give the figure a strong, frontal presence. The inspiration by ancient South Arabian sculpture is evident; the closed eyes, light-marble color and solemnness of the face are front and center. Green bands loop above the head and curve down either side, their color contrasting with the warmer stone. A broad red arch surrounds the head, while green and cream tesserae form a loose checkerboard pattern in the lower background. The mix of warm and cool tones suggests a landscape in seasonal transition.
