What would the Roman Colosseum have looked like in between its heyday and today? Alexander Aboutaam reimagines perhaps the most famous man-made structure in the world.

The mosaic’s palette is a refined symphony of earthy beiges, warm ochres, and gentle greys, with delicate shifts in color to mimic the ancient stone blocks and weathered surfaces of the amphitheater. Shading is masterfully handled, creating depth and dimension in the arches and windows. Carefully placed darker and lighter stones give the illusion of shadow and sunlight, making the structure appear three-dimensional.

The perspective draws the viewer in, with the Colosseum angled dramatically so its curved walls seem to extend beyond the frame. This sense of depth is enhanced by the graduated tones in both the structure and the ground below, reinforcing the impression of realism and monumentality. It was recently re-framed in a light black natural wood frame.
