2026
Polychrome Stone Tesserae
1/1 Edition
38 x 27 inches
Alexander Aboutaam’s newest mosaic follows the geometric style of his earlier work, “Dominion,” bringing together circular forms, blocks of color, and intersecting lines. Composed of an estimated 7,000 to 9,000 individual hand-cut marble pieces, with bright red elements in cast resin, the work contrasts the stone’s natural variations with a more uniform, saturated color. A large red circle on the left balances a broad black crescent on the right, while a smaller black circle anchors the upper composition. Thin black lines cross the pale marble background, connecting and dividing the colored forms.
The narrow vertical lines require particular care and precision in cutting and placement to maintain their straight edges and consistent width. Ochre and green sections introduce softer tones, offsetting the stronger contrast of red and black, while open areas of background give each element room to stand apart.
