Alexander Aboutaam’s mosaic, titled “Masquerade,” continues his long-standing exploration of futuristic human identity and abstracted head forms. Following pieces like “Metropolis” and “Future Pharaoh,” this newest work introduces a new color palette and composition.
Composed of marble and granite sourced from across the Mediterranean, the mosaic leaves gaps in the face that open its final form to interpretation. Curved lines connect the facial features, while circular shapes interrupt their flow. Warm shades of ochre and red contrast with cool gray and pale pink tones. The cream-colored background is staggered to fill the piece with movement and life.
It is also inspired by Aboutaam’s work with the Phantom of the Opera production called Masquerade, an immersive theater experience where audience members are guided through a 5-story building in Midtown that has been decked out. Part of Masquerade’s display was created by the Antico Contempo team, where they worked with artist Barry X Ball to create reproductions of some of his masterwork sculptures, including his Veiled Lady.
