  • Polychrome Stone Tesserae

  • 2025

  • 27 x 27 in (69 x 69 cm)

Description

Alexander Aboutaam first designed this piece after watching "Metropolis," a science-fiction silent film directed by Fritz Lang. The movie, set in a futuristic, dystopian world, resonated deeply with Aboutaam. He was particularly influenced by the character played by Brigitte Helm, known as the Maschinenmensch, which eventually inspired the creation of this mosaic.

This character is displayed on the iconic movie poster art. Blending the gilded decadence of the Art Deco period with curved and straight shapes as motifs, this mosaic became a source of inspiration for much of Aboutaam’s work throughout 2025 and marks a distinct moment in time in his artistic career.

The mosaic shows a Aboutaam’s interpretation of the Maschinenmensch. It is ornamented by curved shapes while the face and torso are made of cut natural stones in shades of gold, black, and beige. The background is light, with circular and rectangular patterns surrounding the figure. The artwork is bordered by a black frame. It can be a striking display of film inspiration and ancient techniques of which there are no others in the world.
