Details
Polychrome stone tesserae
2025
Handcrafted by Farez Jawad
38 x 21.5 in (97 x 55 cm)
Description
This exquisite, handcrafted stone mosaic, featuring the radiant sun and vibrant, multi-colored sun rays, draws inspiration from the free-spirited beauty of Bohemian Art. Concentric yellow tiles form a glowing center, radiating out in alternating rays of deep navy and bright orange.
While Bohemianism began as a 19th-century countercultural movement rooted in freedom, artistic expression, and resistance to materialism, its spirit found new form during the 1960s and 1970s. In that era, a new generation revived Bohemian ideals — embracing nonconformity, handmade craftsmanship, and a deep love for nature, music, and mysticism.
The 1970s aesthetic often reflected this renewed Bohemian energy: bold colors, sun and celestial motifs, psychedelic patterns, and tactile materials like macramé, mosaics, and natural stone. Spaces were layered, soulful, and expressive — a stylistic overlap between the free-spirited Bohemian lifestyle and the graphic, optimistic visuals of retro design.
In this way, the mosaic’s sunburst form and vibrant palette serve as a visual meeting point: where the philosophical heart of Bohemianism meets the joyful, graphic sensibility of the 70s. The result is a piece that feels both deeply rooted and timelessly radiant.
Each tessera is hand-placed, creating an artisan texture that reflects the handcrafted ethos of boho interiors while nodding to the clean lines and vivid palettes of mid-century modern style. Whether placed in a living room, hallway, or creative space, this mosaic offers a statement that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly current.

Creation
Mosaic‑making has a lineage spanning thousands of years. Early civilizations created stone tapestries to adorn homes, honor culture, and impress guests. Antico Contempo brings this tradition into the modern day, utilizing ancient techniques in both restored and contemporary designs.
Each mosaic begins with research into historic patterns, materials, and techniques to capture their cultural and visual language. We reimagine these compositions for a modern setting while honoring their original spirit. In collaboration with mosaic artists, historians, and designers, we create works that unite antique and contemporary sensibilities, rich with color and emotion.
The process starts with natural stone like marble, granite, limestone, onyx, and travertine—never colored or dyed. Hand‑cut into tesserae, every piece is arranged with patience, artistry, and mastery of ancient craft. After weeks, months, or even years of meticulous craftsmanship, each mosaic is completed with a refined frame, ready for effortless display.
