Woven Stone

Details
Polychrome Stone Tesserae
2025
23 x 23 in (58 x 58 cm)
Description
This mosaic draws its inspiration from textile patterns, with its arrangement of straight lines, bold overlaps, and the rhythmic play of color and shape. Alexander Aboutaam, the artist, used the visual language of weaving and fabric design as a foundation, letting the intersecting stripes and layers echo the textures and patterns found in traditional textiles.
For Aboutaam, this piece became the cornerstone of his mosaic work. He considered it the most monumental and influential design he had created, shaping the direction of his later art. The disciplined use of parallel lines and the overlapping forms not only create a sense of depth and structure but also allow for a dynamic mix of red, black, gray, and cream. This approach captured the possibility of movement and softness within the rigid medium of stone, setting a new benchmark for his future mosaics.
The clarity of lines and the way colors intersect demonstrate Aboutaam’s innovative approach and his respect for crafts that blend structure with artistry. This work’s influence is seen in the continued evolution of his mosaics, where straight lines and layered color fields serve as both inspiration and guiding principle. Taking over 100 hours to complete, this edition is the only one created.
